Dr. Derek Apel, PhD & P.Eng

Derek Apel is an industry expert specializing in geomechanical mine design for underground and surface mining/tunneling operations. His work and research have taken him from diamond mines in the Canadian Arctic to the bustling megacities of China. He has developed long term prediction methods for rockbursting using advanced machine learning methods and has interests in the development of thermo insulating barriers for civil and mining applications. Derek has over 26 years of experience in the mining industry as an engineer, inspector, consultant, and researcher. He has been a professor at the University of Alberta in the Mining Engineering department since 2008 and is the Senior Associated consultant of TerraShift Engineering Ltd.

Danielle Farrell, BSc. & GIT

Danielle is an environmental scientist with a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Memorial University in Newfoundland and has Over 9 years' experience working in geological and environmental lab and field settings. Currently working in assessment & risk in the aggregate mining industry. My most recent work has concentrated on Phase 1 and 2 ESA's and environmental sampling for the Edmonton TransEd LRT Valley Line.

Danielle previously worked for the Memorial University Department of Earth Science, investigating impacts of climate change in Canada's boreal forest. She has experience in experimental design, creating data sets, and analyzing data (including stable isotopic and results from elemental analysis) to contribute to the current body of work in this area. Lab competencies include: sample organization and prep, GC, GC/MS, mass spectrometry (including ICP-MS), BOD analysis, various soil fractionation methods, troubleshooting equipment.
